Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama yesterday (Feb. 05) ordered the issuance of an arrest warrant for the former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) – Piyal Nandana Dissanayake, against whom charges have been filed over the alleged misappropriation of USD 187,000. The order was made as the suspect, who is currently overseas with the court permission, failed to appear before the court on the scheduled date. Officers of the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) informed the court that funds belonging to SLC had been transferred to a bank in the United States through unauthorized access, and that the relevant funds have since been frozen. Appearing on behalf of the suspect, President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa submitted that no facts had emerged linking his client to the alleged offence and that investigations had been concluded. He accordingly requested that his client be discharged from the case. Meanwhile, FCID officers further informed the court that the case, which was filed in 2018, has been referred to the Attorney General for instructions on the future course of legal proceedings. Emphasizing that a suspect who travels overseas with the court approval is nonetheless required to appear before the court on the stipulated date, the Chief Magistrate ordered the suspect’s arrest and issued the relevant warrant. The case was fixed to be taken up again on Sep. 30.
